Abkhazia facing ecological disaster

General Secretary of the Greens Party George Gachechiladze has arranged a press conference on the theme – Abkhazia facing the danger of ecological disaster.
At the conference the Party leader talked about possible results that threaten the Black Sea and Abkhazian territory on the whole.

Ecological disaster that occurred on an oil bore-hole at sea in the Gulf of Mexico clearly showed the possibility of its repetition in Abkhazia if the plans of “Rosneft” (Russian petroleum) for obtaining oil from the Black Sea are realized. In consequence of an accident on the oil and gas bore-hole of BP (British Petroleum) company on April 20 in the Gulf of Mexico, 700 tons of oil per day flow in the sea. Till now every attempt to stop this process has failed. This fact once more showed the world that even under the favorable conditions of highly developed technology no one is insured from disaster.
Despite that the bore-hole is 80 kilometers offshore the U.S.A. coastal line, the resulting oil slick spreading for 1000 kilometers has already approached the states of Florida, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi (the total amount of their population – 25 million men); In the mentioned states distinguished for their unique tourist resorts and highly developed fishing and fish processing industries, a state of emergency is declared! The number of those firms (fisheries, hotels, tourist agencies etc) who have appealed to the court to prosecute a claim for damages (total losses range within 30 to 100 billion U.S.A. dollars) reaches 30 000. According the experts’ estimates liquidation of the disaster results and the recovery of the ecosystem may possibly require years or even decades and it may not be completely managed.
In 2009 May 26 the chief of Russian company “Rosneft” (Russian Petroleum) Sergei Bogdannikov and Minister of Economics of Abkhazian separative government Kristina Ozgan signed a treaty for collaboration. In consequence “Rosneft” was granted the right for exploitation of gas and oil deposits in Abkhazian sea equatorium. The company will perform exploring works on a scale of 3,9 thousand square kilometers. Bore-holes will be located 9-10 kilometers offshore the coastal line (the bore-hole of BP is 80 kilometers offshore the U.S.A. coastal line).
Abkhazia possesses unique nature and climatic conditions, the Black Sea resources and tourist potential. Despite the hardest conditions these factors provide 40% of Abkhazia’s income.
The present day budget, which constitutes approximately 120 million U.S.A. dollars is replenished mainly by contributions from tourist and service spheres. In case of analogical disaster Abkhazia will lose its unique ecosystem and the population its source of income. This will even more hasten migration of native population. That will only be beneficial for Russia, as all the Kremlin needs in Abkhazia is to increase Russian military potential on the Black Sea.

The address of ”Georgia Greens Party” to Abkhazian nongovernmental organizations and opposition Parties

”Georgia Greens Party” is ready for collaboration with Abkhazian nongovernmental organizations and opposition parties in order to save together Abkhazia and the Black Sea from ecological disaster.
Georgia Greens Party is ready together with the representatives of Abkhazian non-governmental organizations and opposition parties to create a united coordinative council, in which representatives from Europe will be included. Georgia Greens Party is ready to perform the organization of this meeting (be it in Tbilisi, Sokhumi, Zugdidi or any other town).
